The director of the film, Jon. M Chu will also direct the stage production of Crazy Rich Asians, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This would be Jon’s first time directing a play.

He has however, directed films that were adapted from musicals, including In the Heights, and the upcoming Wicked film.

The musical is aiming for Broadway and being developed by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures.

The movie was adapted from the book trilogy by Kevin Kwan.

Constance Wu and Henry Golding starred in the movie, which won a Critic’s Choice Award and a Teen Choice Award.

It was nominated for a SAG Award and a Golden Globe, but did not win either.

The timeline for the pre-Broadway engagement will be announced very soon.

THE PLOT

Crazy Rich Asians follows an American named Rachel Chu (Constance) who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry).

They are attending a wedding for Nick’s best friend, Colin Khoo and his supermodel fiancee, Araminta Lee.

While there, Nick and Rachel visit his family, and Rachel finds out that he comes from a very rich family.

He is also the sole heir to the family’s fortune, but his family does not approve of Rachel, who grew up middle-class.

Nick later reveals that he plans to propose to Rachel, which means he would stay in New York and not take over the family business.

By the end of the film, she earns his family’s approval and they get engaged.

‘NO SEQUEL?’

Despite many films being turned into musicals like Mean Girls or Back to the Future, Crazy Rich Asians fans are not too happy about this news.

They would rather have a sequel film that follows the plot of the books.

An X, formerly Twitter user, wrote, “We don’t need a musical… we want a 2nd movie!”

“Where tf is the sequel?” asked another.

“Modern studio filmmaking is so washed cause how do you not immediately fast track a sequel to a massive hit and let it go to Broadway first???” a third wondered.

“Everything but the sequel,” another tweeted.

“Baby we asked for a sequel to the movie…” a fan begged.

They continued, “At this point, we’re likelier to see a movie of the musical before a part two.”

“They’re going to end up turning this into a movie musical before they get around to adapting the other two bestsellers in the series, aren’t they?” one X user asked.
